Technical Information About Our Servers
|
PCFA.ORG utilizes two servers to provide our services. The servers
are located at the Bank of Prescott, Prescott, Arkansas. The internet
connection is furnished by IOCC.COM.
The PCFA.ORG is a server is a Dell 6100 built on December 20, 1997 and
donated to PCFA by Brett Wish in August, 2002. It went online for us at 12:02 p.m.
on Friday, October 5, 2002.
It uses quad (4) PentiumPro 200 central processing units (CPUs) with 512kB Level II
cache and one Gigabyte (1024MB) of RAM.
The system uses the PowerEdge RAID II with PERC controller to handle six Seagate
Barracuda ST19171WC hard disk drives. Three of the drives are configured in RAID-5 to
provide a boot partition, about 14 GB of storage space and 2GB of swap space. A fourth
drive is configurated as stand-alone drive with about 8 GB of storage space for online
backup files. Two other drives are hot spares. The server can automatically rebuild a
failed drive from the RAID array onto one of these spares without ever loosing a
"beat".
A pair of AIC-7880 SCSI controllers take care of an NEC CD-ROM and a Sony SDT-9000 DDS-3
tape drive. The ethernet controller is the Intel EtherPro 100.
Backup power is provided by dual Cyberpower CPS1500AVR uninterruptible power supplies.
The www2.PCFA.ORG server is a VMACX (TM) purchased from Vidcom Center in Texarkana TX
in April 1996. It uses an Intel Pentium 166 Megahertz Central Processing Unit (CPU) on a
ASUSTeK Computer, Inc. P/I-P55TP4N motherboard with 64MB of RAM.
Hard drives are controlled by an Adaptec 2940 controller board. The primary hard disk
drive is a Seagate Barracuda 9LP ST39173N 9.11 Gigabyte SCSI-2 unit. The secondary hard
disk drive is either a Seagate Hawk ST32155N 2.2 Gigabyte SCSI-2 unit or a Hewlett-Packard
C3725 2.2 Gigabyte SCSI-2 unit, depending on which one was last swapped out.
Ethernet is from an SMC 8416BT UltraEZ card.
When community "dial-up" access was made available, it was through a
Boca BB2016 16-port serial communications board, which gives
the DOS equivalent of COM1 through COM16. At one time, there were twelve
Maxtech XM288EA (28.8kbps) modems attached
to the BB2016.
Linux
is the multi-user operating system for the computer
which permits thousands of persons to use the computer simultaneously.
Linux became available to the public in November 1991.
Initially written by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in
Finland and named 'minix,' when the OS was placed onto a computer for
distribution, someone used the name LINUX, and the name stuck.
Linux is pronounced "LIH-nuhks," according to Linus. To Americans,
it's "Leanox."
