Secure Shell Access to PCFA.ORG

 In memoriam, Charles Ray Cross

In order to tighten up security on PCFA.ORG, we are ending traditional TELNET access (port 23). Instead, we will allow Secure Shell (SSH) access (port 22). You will need an SSH client in order to use the secure shell. There are many out there. We're listing some of the easiest ones to get and use.

 Client For Windows

Get Putty 0.58 (yes, click the link). It takes just a few seconds to download 421,888 bytes. The program is easy to install and configure, and it's free!

If you save the 'putty.exe' file to your desktop, skip to "Configuration". If you prefer to save to a more "standardized" location, such as:
     C:\Program Files\Putty
you'll need to make the directory, navigate to that directory and create a shortcut, then drag the shortcut to your desktop or to the quick launch bar.

Configuration:
When you load Putty, most of the setup is at the first screen:
Host Name (or IP address): PCFA.ORG
Protocol: SSH
Under "Saved Sessions" click the "Save" button to save to "Default Settings", or you can enter a name and then click "Save".
Click the "Open" button.
Click "Yes" when you get the "PuTTY Security Alert".
At the "login as:" prompt, enter your account name.
At the "password:" prompt, enter your password.
You're in! Now you can do all the things you could do with telnet.
Enter 'exit' to close the PCFA session and to close Putty.

Here are some notes for subsequent sessions:

If you save other than default, you will need to click the profile and click "Load" before you make changes or click "Open".
You can change other items under "Category", if you like. For example:
Terminal | Keyboard | Linux
Window | Rows: 36, Columns: 132
Window | Lines of Scrollback: 250 (maybe more?)
Window | Appearance | Cursor Appearance | Underline, Cursor Blinks
Window | Appearance | Font: Courier New, 8 pt.
Window | Colours | (especially the foreground, background, and cursor).
Connection | Auto-login username (you will no longer see the "login as:" prompt)
Remember to go back to "Session", highlight the name, and click the "Save" button.

Putty operates like X applications. Under "Category", if you choose Window | Selection | Windows mode, use the left mouse button to select. If you release the left button, the middle button extends your selection. Use the right button to paste at the current location of the cursor.

 Client for Macintosh

Get JellyfiSSH from the Apple downloads web site.

Configuration:
Bookmark Title: PCFA
Host or IP: pcfa.org
Login: (your PCFA login name)
Type: SS1
Encryption: ?
Click the "Add" button.
Click the "Connect" button.
At the "password:" prompt, enter your password.
You're in! Now you can do all the things you could do with telnet.
Enter 'exit' to close the PCFA session.
