The Prescott Community Freenet Association is delighted that you have established an account and we hope you find the PCFA.ORG system to be useful. PCFA.ORG offers access to limited Internet services. Keep this informative document handy. It should help you get a successful start and show you how to get the most from PCFA.ORG in a short amount of time. At first, you may be intimidated, confused, or frustrated. Be patient. Don't give up! Your account name and your initial password have been assigned and are shown below. Keep these in a secure place. NEVER give your password to anyone -- not even the system administrators! If PCFA.ORG ever has major technical problems, your account may be reset to the password sent with this mailing. In order to obtain this account, you signed a contract and agreement that included an "Appropriate Use Policy." You are bound to the terms of that policy and any subsequent changes to it. If you violate the terms, you may loose your account. PCFA.ORG hopes to be one small step on your journey along the "Information Superhighway." It does not have every service you want, but it provides access to resources until you need other resources from a commercial Internet service provider (see last section for more info). Have fun! Do You Need a PCFA.ORG Account? Access to PCFA.ORG requires existing internet access (PCFA.ORG no longer provides dial-up service). Dial-up service, which allows your computer to use your telephone line, is typically provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) like IOCC.COM. An account on the PCFA.ORG service is not required to access the PCFA.ORG World Wide Web "home page." The "home page" lists most services available on PCFA.ORG and may be accessed by pointing a web browser at: http://www.pcfa.org/ Only services which require an account (the ability gain restricted access with a login), such as e-mail and web page serving, require an account on the PCFA.ORG server. When you no longer need the services of the PCFA.ORG server that require a login, the Prescott Community Freenet Association asks that you send e-mail to 'admin@pcfa.org' or a letter to 326 Cale Road, Prescott, asking that your account be deleted. This helps security on the server. Your PCFA.ORG Account IMPORTANT AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION Your Account Name: ___________________ All characters are lower case. Your account name can not be changed. Your Password: ___________________ There are some upper-case characters, some lower-case characters, and some numbers. You can change your password at any time by logging in via TELNET (see below). Do NOT give anyone your password! Your E-Mail Address: ___________________@pcfa.org Give your e-mail address (including at PCFA dot ORG) to anyone you want to send e-mail to you. Do NOT give your password - it is not needed to send e-mail to you! An account on PCFA.ORG provides you with two immediate services, e-mail and web page hosting. Some of the other available services are detailed below. Popular web browsers include e-mail clients. The Netscape® browser includes Messenger®. The Microsoft® Internet Explorer® browser includes Outlook Express®. If you have not already configured these readers to handle your ISP's e-mail, you may want to configure them to handle your PCFA.ORG e-mail. The servers are as follows: Incoming E-Mail (POP3) server (port 110): pcfa.org Outgoing E-Mail (SMTP) server (port 25): pcfa.org PCFA.ORG does not use secure passwords. The POP3 protocol retrieves e-mail messages from a mail server, stores them on your computer, then deletes them from the server. The PCFA.ORG server also handles the IMAP protocol, which allows messages to stay on the PCFA.ORG mail server until you delete the message or specifically move them to your computer. With either POP3 or IMAP, you should be aware of quotas which restrict the amount of storage space you use on the PCFA.ORG server; if that quota is exceeded, the PCFA.ORG server will reject any incoming e-mail. You may access your PCFA.ORG e-mail from a web browser. Point the browser to: http://www.pcfa.org/atdot/ This is especially useful if you do not have a POP3 e-mail client that can handle more than one e-mail account, or when you are away from your regular computer (such as on a trip). Be aware that the 'atdot' program does not save a copy of your outgoing messages. You may access your PCFA.ORG e-mail from a TELNET client. After you complete your logon (see the section entitled "Login") and get to the'$' shell prompt enter pine to access the PCFA.ORG mail system. Select 'L' "Folder List" then "INBOX" to see a listing of messages. Press Enter to select the first one. The "menu" is at the bottom of the screen. You may 'D'elete the message, 'R'eply to the sender, 'F'orward the message to another account, 'S'ave it, or 'E'xport it to a file (which you may then download). If you want to leave the message where it is, press go to the 'N'ext message. When you are finished, choose 'M' "Main Menu". To send e-mail from the Pine main menu, choose 'C' "Compose Message", type the message, then press Ctrl-X to send. Once again, notice the menu at the bottom of the screen. When you finish using Pine, select 'Q' to Quit. You must respond 'Y' to 'Really quit pine?' If you deleted any messages, respond 'Y' to 'Expunge the deleted messages from INBOX'. The '$' prompt returns. When you are ready to leave PCFA.ORG, enter 'exit'. Web Page Hosting Some PCFA.ORG users want to create a web page. The URL for a user's web page is: http://www.pcfa.org/~username where username is your account name. The tilde (~) means "user's home directory". Your "home directory" is located at: /home/username/ Any web pages must be stored in the "public_html" directory, which is located at: /home/username/public_html The file name for the first page must be either 'homepage.html' or 'index.html' (no quotes). Subsequent pages, linked in your first page, can have any name, and can be accessed directly from a web browser. For example, a page named 'biography.html' can be accessed with: http://www.pcfa.org/~username/biography.html You can create the pages using any number of software programs, then upload the files to the PCFA.ORG server using an FTP (file transfer protocol) client that is installed on your computer. Login Use a TELNET client to login to the PCFA.ORG server. If you do not have dedicated TELNET client software, most web browser allow you to point to the URL: telnet://pcfa.org When TELNET connects to PCFA, you should see a "Welcome" statement, followed by the "login" prompt. When you respond to the "login" prompt, you see the "Password" prompt. Welcome to PCFA.ORG, operated by . . . login: Password: All letters in the "login" are lower case and appear on the screen when you type them. Most letters in the "Password" are lower case, but do not appear while typing. If you see a 'Login incorrect' message, try again -- both your login name and password must be perfect. The "backspace" key probably won't work like you expect during login. After a successful login, you will see some messages and the PCFA prompt, which looks like this: PCFA:~$ When you login to the PCFA shell prompt, you can have a quick and easy interface if you enter 'menu' (no quotes). When you are ready to leave PCFA.ORG, enter 'exit' (no quotes) to logout. Change Your Password The first time you login, immediately type: passwd to change your password. Type it carefully (it is not visible). Passwords must be at least six characters and include at least one capital letter, number or symbol (but no spaces). Choose a password that is not easy for someone else to guess. Make a note of your new password and keep that note in a secure place (don't stick it to the monitor)! Change your password often and at any time you discover that someone may be using your account. You are responsible for all traffic through your account. If you forget your password, the system administrator must assign a new password ($10.00 fee). Your login name can not be changed. Services from the PCFA.ORG Shell Prompt To "surf" the World Wide Web, get to the '$' prompt and enter lynx You should see the PCFA.ORG home page. The bottom of the screen has the phrase '-- press space for next page --' and a menu of other options. Use the space bar to move from one screen to another. Use the down-arrow or up-arrow keys to move from one highlight to another (even if one is to the right or left of the other). Each highlight is a "hyperlink" to more information. If you see 'You are already at the top of this document,' you pressed too many keys or held one down too long; just wait a moment for everything to catch up. Press Enter key or hte right-arrow key to choose a "hyperlink" to another PCFA.ORG document or to "travel" to another computer. Press the left-arrow key to return to the previous document. Allow enough time. If you want to go back to the home page quickly, choose 'M' "Main Screen". Press 'Q' to quit lynx. When you are ready to leave PCFA.ORG, enter 'exit'. To quickly access a specific computer choose 'G' "Go" and type the URL, such as: http://www.iocc.com You may specify the uniform resource locator (URL) when you load 'lynx'. To go directly to a PCFA.ORG user's home page use a command similar to: lynx http://www.pcfa.org/~username/ The tilde (~) means "home directory of the user." File Transfers If you want to transfer a file from another computer to the PCFA.ORG server, use File Transfer Protocol (ftp). From the $ prompt, you can use ncftp computername which sends 'anonymous' for the account name and your e-mail address for the password. When you 'ftp' (via 'ncftp') to another computer, you usually enter 'cd /pub' followed by a series of 'ls' and 'cd' commands until you get into the directory where the file is located. When you are in the correct directory, enter either 'ascii' or 'binary' to assure you'll get text or program. Enter 'get filename' or 'mget *' to bring the file(s) to PCFA.ORG. Do a final 'cd /', then type 'quit'. Notice how the "*" and "?" characters are wildcards. This shell-based FTP command merely gets the file(s) to PCFA.ORG and places them into your home directory. To get the file(s) to your personal computer using standard communications software, enter a command similar to one of these: sz perfect.exe sz file* sz * 'sz' uses the Z-Modem protocol to send one file, several files, or all files, respectively, from PCFA.ORG to your personal computer. Normally, Z-Modem is automatic, so you don't have to issue a command at your personal computer to start the download. PCFA.ORG also supports X-Modem (commands are 'sx' and 'rx'). Note: If the filename does not agree with filenames your computer can handle, you need to rename the file. For example, if 'ls' shows: Great-File.I-Downloaded.Exe and you are using MS-DOS®, which limits file names to 8-characters, a dot, and three more characters, then enter the command to move (rename) the file: mv Great-File.I-Downloaded.Exe perfect.exe Watch for files with names which exceed the specifications your operating system can handle ('FileName1' and 'FILEName2' are both 'FILENAME' to MS-DOS®). Finally, clean your PCFA.ORG directory by removing files no longer needed with commands similar to: rm perfect.exe rm file* rm * Remember: Do not leave files in your home directory on PCFA.ORG. They will be deleted. You may leave files in the public_html directory. The procedure for uploading files is similar to downloading, except the command is 'rz' (and may not be necessary with your software). Then, you typically have to enter a command at your personal computer to start the upload. When you are ready to leave PCFA.ORG, enter 'exit'. Problems, Questions, Comments When you try to login, if you get only a blank screen, press Enter a time or two to synchronize modems and you should then see the login. If you repeatedly get a message similar to "improper login," be sure you are entering the account name and password correctly with proper capitalization. If you see error messages which indicate the PCFA.ORG computer may be having hardware problems, please telephone the system administrator, Danny Stewart at 887-5930. If you have comments or suggestions, please send e-mail to admin@pcfa.org (not to the personal account). Appropriate Use Policy (Sometimes referred to as "Acceptable Use Policy") PCFA.ORG is an computer system designed to provide access community resources and to the Internet. Users are bound by this following Appropriate Use Policy. Furthermore, any person using PCFA.ORG consents to the conditions of this policy. Any traffic from a PCFA.ORG user which traverses another system or network, including any access to the Internet, becomes subject to the comparable policies of any system or network through which the traffic flows. Thus, PCFA.ORG users are automatically subject to the policies of the Internet service provider which provides the PCFA.ORG computer with a connection. Any violations of any system's or network's policies are deemed to be violations of the policies of PCFA.ORG. In general: This system is to be used for legal purposes only. Non-compliance with this policy will result in the immediate removal of the user's account. When You Want More From the Internet PCFA.ORG is a community free net project that provides limited Internet services. The Prescott Community Freenet Association raises money to pay for all equipment and administrative services. When you are ready for commercial internet service, such as a PPP connection, use the Internet Service Provider (ISP) which provides the connection to the PCFA.ORG computer. When local folks use this provider the viability of Internet service in Prescott continues and so does the connection for the PCFA.ORG computer. If the ISP does not have enough business and must abandon the connection in Prescott, the PCFA.ORG computer will loose its connection (and we don't want that to happen, do we?). The provider is:
