PCFA.ORG users are limited to 2.5 Megabytes of hard disk drive space. This
includes the files in the 'public_html' folder (home page), incoming e-mail, and saved
messages. Accounts which provide substantial content of local interest may receive more
space which can handle the content (eg. providers of local newspapers, the local television
station, the Depot Museum, etc.)
Users should not store large amounts of e-mail on the PCFA.ORG
computer. Doing so prevents a user from receiving a large file or document via e-mail from
someone who unwitting sends such a file without realizing there are limits to what users
may store on the computer.
Users should check their mail regularly and be sure there is not a large amount of mail in
the 'saved messages' folder. Also, users should notify other users with whom they
correspond not to send programs by e-mail -- instead send the URL from which the file may be
obtained.
When the disk quota is exceeded, the PCFA.ORG administrator must intervene.
This intervention takes 15-20 minutes of time. The administrator will send you a notice
three times, usually including the text of the cover page for any e-mail to which a program
was attached. The program and message causing the offense will be deleted. After three
messages, the administrator will simply delete offending matter without notice to you for
two more times. After that, the administrator will remove your account.
To determine your status on quota, watch the login message (or issue the command
quota at the $ prompt:
Checking disk quotas . . .
Disk quotas for user admin (uid 501):
Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace
/dev/sdb2 2384 2500 5000 92 150 300
Here's what it means:
- Filesystem
- /dev/sdb2 -- PCFA.ORG uses the second partition on the second SCSI drive (don't
worry about it).
- blocks
- 2384 -- this account is using 2384 blocks.
- quota
- 2500 -- this account has a quota of 2500 blocks (about 2.5 Meg). From "blocks",
above, we see the user is approaching the limit.
- limit
- 5000 -- the absolute limit for this user. If this amount is reached, no more files
can be added, and PCFA.ORG won't even let the user login.
- grace
- If blank, there is no over-limit amount on disk space.
- file
- 92 -- this account has 92 files on the system
- quota
- 150 -- this account has a quota of 150 files.
- limit
- 300 -- the absolute limit for number of files for this account. If this amount is
reached, the account can not add more files.
- grace
- If blank, there is no over-limit amount on number of files.
