Overview

PCFA.ORG removes user accounts from the server when that user has not successfully completed an interactive login during the previous three months. The removal is done without notice or warning.

Seldom does a user notice that their account has been deleted, because they have not been using it.

Background

Beginning in July 1995, the Prescott Community Freenet Association started the Wolf Den server and provided free Internet access for the community. In February 1998, the educational discount rates (e-rate) required us to leave the public school connection and move to a commercial internet server provider's line. At that time, we became PCFA.ORG. Almost all active Wolf Den / PCFA.ORG users have established an account with IOCC.COM and no longer need their PCFA.ORG accounts.

When an inactive account remains on an internet server, it not only takes up space and administrator time, but also leaves the server susceptible to security breaches.

The deletion of accounts helps us to remove those problems.

How to Keep an Account

If you want to keep your PCFA.ORG account, do an "interactive" login at least once every three months. Here are two examples of how to do this:
  1. TELNET into PCFA.ORG from another computer, often from your web browser (telnet://pcfa.org where you normally enter addresses such as http://www.pcfa.org). (You may need to configure your web browser to associate the telnet application with the telnet:
Please note: Simply retreiving e-mail via POP3 does not count! POP3 is used by e-mail programs such as used in Netscape, Internet Explorer, Eudora, Pegasus and Outlook.

How to Check Status

Part of the login message includes a phrase that says:
Your last interactive login was on (date at time)
That phrase indicates the last interactive login date.

Users may check for the date of their last interactive login by getting to the $ prompt and entering the command

cat .last_login
(notice the period before the file name). If that's all you need, enter 'exit' to logoff. It's that simple.

If Your Account Is Deleted

Any user whose account is deleted may submit an application for an account under the same guidelines as applying for a new account. Applications are available at the Bank of Prescott or Auto Parts and Supply of Prescott (NAPA). Specify "REAPPLY" next to your preferred account name. If that name has not been reassigned, it will most likely be reinstated for you.

Hyperterminal Configuration

If Hyperterminal appears when you attempt TELNET://www.pcfa.org from a web browser (or if you prefer Start | Programs | Accessories | Communication | Hyperterminal | Hypertrm.exe), respond as follows:
  • At the "Connection Description" dialog box: Enter PCFA for "Name", choose an icon and click the "OK" button.
  • At the "Connect to:" dialog box: Use the pick list at "Connect Using" and scroll down to select "TCP/IP (Winsock)".
  • At the revised "Connect to" dialog box: type "PCFA" at the "Host name:" prompt and be sure "Port number:" says "23".
  • Shortly after you press "Enter", you should see the PCFA login.
